Periodontics is the treatment of diseases associated with the gums and other oral conditions affecting the soft tissues and bone of the mouth. Periodontal (gum) diseases destroy fibres and bone and can result in tooth loss.

Periodontics also includes the replacement of teeth with implants, cosmetic gum treatment and the replacement of lost bone (which is known as a bone graft) around teeth as well as areas where teeth have been lost.
